Erased from History: The Devastating Impact of a 1910 Report on Black Healthcare

How a 1910 report erased 35,000 Black doctors and still affects Black healthcare more than a century laterIn the early 20th century, a report by educator Abraham Flexner seemed to bring about much-needed change in the medical education landscape. However, its far-reaching consequences would have a devastating impact on the very people it was meant to help: Black doctors and medical schools.

A Report that Changed Everything
Abraham Flexner's 1910 report detailed the state of medical education in the United States, concluding that there were too many medical schools. While this may have seemed like a logical solution to address the issue of overcrowding and poor quality education, it had a profound impact on Black medical colleges. The report led to the closure of five Black medical schools across the country, effectively erasing 35,000 Black doctors from the medical landscape.

The Legacy of Flexner's Report
Today, there are only four historically Black medical schools in the United States. These institutions – Howard University, Meharry Medical College, Morehouse School of Medicine, and Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science – have managed to thrive despite the odds against them. However, their existence is a testament to the resilience of Black doctors and medical professionals who continue to face systemic barriers in the healthcare industry.

The Lasting Impact on Black Healthcare
The effects of Flexner's report can still be felt today. The closure of Black medical schools led to a significant reduction in the number of Black physicians practicing medicine. This, in turn, has resulted in a lack of representation and diversity in the healthcare industry. Moreover, it has perpetuated systemic inequalities in healthcare access and outcomes for Black communities.

The story of Abraham Flexner's report serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact that well-intentioned but misguided policies can have on marginalized communities. As we continue to navigate the complexities of healthcare reform, it is essential that we acknowledge and learn from this dark chapter in history. By doing so, we can work towards creating a more equitable and just healthcare system for all.
